Post 6x25 – Steve is struggling with his medical discharge from the Navy.
Kirk Emerson (the Marine with no legs from 4x20) hears about the plane crash-landing on the news. Maybe he makes some calls or something to see if Steve survived and somehow finds out about the transplant (idk how). Kirk makes a trip to Hawaii because knows what Steve is going through.

I just wanna say that this whole exchange makes me smile and not just because Danny blatantly asks his partner what he’s wearing in a flirty manner but because of Steve’s face the whole time Danny is explaining the situation at home and then while he’s ranting. Steve is smiling the entire time. This big goofy grin while he listens to his partner rant and be Danny-ish. It’s adorable and he’s so fucking smitten it makes my heart explode. I miss this. When Steve was infatuated by Danny’s rants instead of annoyed by them.

After taking cue by the usual keen tags by @teruel-a-witch I dare add my usual two cents...
Reading all of the tags, I honestly find it amusing that no one took notice of the absolute dichotomy in Steve's actions.
On one side, he shows no qualms about suddenly taking off, disappearing to an unknown location, for a probably suicide mission, and of course with absolutely no anticipation about how much time (weeks? months? years?) it'll take him to complete this mission and come back home. After all, he's a SEAL and this is part of the job description, taking off without a warning for some classified mission that could probably kill him and no one will ever know.
He has no family, Mary is just a name on a phone screen for some random, small talk call every four or eight months or so, the grief and time and loss grown like fortress walls between them. If he dies, no one will mourn him because he purposefully refused to get married and have children like many of his buddies did. Also, this is exactly the kind of behaviour he probably sucked in from both of his parents while growing up, by being shown and probably also told. His father was a passing figure in many of his days, too caught up in his job and his job devotion to even make an effort to be present in Steve's life. Sure, he offered the random quality times outings: tinkering with the Marquis, hiking the petroglyphs trail, fishing in their secret spot. That's it. That's all Steve retains of his father. He was taught to cherish those rare, precious moments because his job was too important to be jeopardised, it came before everything, his duty came before everything, and look at Grandfather Steven's sacrifice. Even if Steve missed his father, missed having a father, he surely stopped complaining at some point, sucked it up, manned up, and understood that a greater good always comes first. Here he doesn't know yet the truth about his mother, but I suppose that a woman who manages to cut herself off her own children, without telling her husband either (sorry, that's not the love of her life because she could've planned this with him, in case. Similis cum similibus, so I guess she chose John because it was the convenient, business-mind partner she needed....only she didn't anticipate he could've really loved her his own way, and go crazy over his truth obsession and his revenge), could've been not exactly your average, cookies baker, kiss-booboo-better doting mother.
He breathed this kind of subtle, passive toxicity, since when he was born.
But this doesn't mean he considered it right.
Of course he didn't need to tell Danny. Of course he could've warned the Governor and he would've called the team to deliver the news and assign the leading role to Danny. Of course he could've simply left a sticky note communicating his leave for undisclosed location and for undisclosed time. Of course. That's probably what old Steve would've done. I really don't think before taking off for South Korea with Freddie, he called Cath to warn her and say goodbye. Freddie probably had a last call with Kelly, but Steve? Steve had no need to tell Cath. So what’s changed in him?
Danny. Danny has been the motivation factor. And not only because Steve loves him, mind it: he could've left with no warning and never called him before getting off the plane with Wo Fat. But Danny has spent two years teaching Steve (well, basically YELLING, but it's simply Danny's loud way to say I love you, idiot) how human relationships, healthy human relationships, between people who love each other and are not ashamed of showing vulnerability, work.
My two cents? Steve did know and expect that he would've hurt Danny. He knew Danny cared for him even if after the double Rachel fiasco Steve couldn't afford to hope for something else anymore. But he knew how hurt Danny would've felt, how betrayed, especially knowing how out of the blue the divorce came to him, despite the obvious marriage failure signs...Steve probably feels, unconsciously, that Danny suffers from the same abandonment issues as he does. THAT'S WHY HE BRACES HIMSELF BEFORE ANSWERING. He knows how much it burns that idea that you don't matter enough, that all the words and touches and confessions and laughter and intimacy were not enough to keep that person with you. He felt it with Rachel coming back. Twice.
So he did what he would've wanted Danny to do for him instead of blindsiding him, catching him off guard and throwing him in a pit of self-doubt and pain. HE WARNED HIM. Remember though that Steve doesn't do well with words. Nor with feelings. He's better with buying an ass-expensive suite at a dolphin-pool-equipped hotel, or showing at Meka's vigil, or at court hearings. He goes by I picked you, didn't I? and I know you, and that's the way he can say I love you. And if he had told Danny he needed to go? Duh. We all know, and Steve knows too, that Danny would've probably talked him out of it, or evrn went with him putting himself in danger, especially after the Jenna incident. He knows Danny, and that’s why he left the letter: he couldn’t risk being talked out of it.
His letter wasn't a goodbye letter, nor a please forgive my asshole behaviour letter, nor a dryly communication letter. It's the very opposite, and that's why it's handwritten. It's Steve’s way to say
I'll come back, I'll always fight to come back to my family, to you, but I need to do this, and to do it alone, because I know you'd come with me and I can't risk your life, I can't lose you, like I risked and lost Freddie's life. But if I don't come back, please be aware that I thought about you all the time and that you're the only one who could've made me change my mind, and that's why I can't hear your voice until it's done. I'm helpless when it comes to you. Take care of our family like I'd do, like you'd take care of me if we were fighting here together. If I don't come back and no one will tell you because you're not my spouse, this letter is my last gift to you, because YOU ARE my spouse and I'm sorry I must do this.
I’ll be in touch. Mahalo.

Awkward...
Or how Steve needed the ohana to be more natural with Danno
McDanno meta. 2x22 meta. The reunion.
Okay, I just wanted to point things I already talked in these two metas here and here.
But... I will repeat, the woman in quarantine episode 2x20 saying her husband disappeared two week and didn't return her calls, is a mcdanno mirror, which placed us in the fact that Danny and Steve current separation was taken with romantic subtext.
Then... Remember the "I'll think about you the whole time" quote? Adding the whole flirting, and the 'Surf Buddies', something that could be seen normal, but Steve's little sister made it look like very gay? And that was the sensation in Danny's and Steve's reaction?
Keep all of that in mind, because episode 2x22 was the awkward reunion between them, why? Because it was written and shown with homoerotic subtext and sexual tension, lowered thanks to the presence of the supportive ohana.
And let me just stop a little over this idea... What is the supportive ohana? Well...
The supportive ohana will be there when you will try to make something hard, and you need their presence to encourage yourself to do it... Example? Okay...
Episode 2x17... Yes, the flirting show...
Danny was able to introduce Gaby to Gracie, thanks to the ohana support over there. Right?
He invited all his friends because it was very important to him and very hard, a huge change.
With the ohana there, Everything is lighter and easier, and normal.
Now... Steve will make use of it...
Awkward 1
I won't avoid the fact that Steve was terrified to call Danny once he captured Wu Fat.
His body language is screaming he needs to encourage himself in doing that call.
He wouldn't feel the struggle of it was Chin or Kono' who he was about to call. And he could avoid Danny and make it easier, and call one of them. But no, he knew he had to call him.
Go check this post here, @kozuszek is the creator, I'm so agreed with the appreciation of Steve's behavior, because look...
Gif set credit @kozuszek 👇
Steve searches for a private place, he's a focused man, he wrote in the letter he needed to find Wu Fat, so he planned in his head (as an excuse to resist the will to call Dany everyday, because he was thinking about him the whole time, thank you writers) and after capture Wu Fat he told himself that just then, he would call Danny.
So focused soldier Steve has Wu Fat, now is time to call Danny, and yes he needs to know about that number, but he could call Chin for that, right?
He stares at the phone and sighs, the time has come. (I will bet his heart is racing and not just because he finished the first part of his mission). He looks up, then back at the phone, dimples of discontent. Is really hard for him to face Danny after knowing he left him without a word and two week without answering his calls.
And again looking back and forward and okay, is calling... Calling... Calling...
Danno picks up "Detective Williams" ... But Steve didn't!!!! He didn't answer at first! And the camera wasn't showing us Steve but Danny, so imagine Steve frozen, with the phone on his ear, hearing Danny's voice after two weeks, after missing him badly, and think about him, and knowing Danny should feel very mad at him. So yes, not just heart racing but speechless!!! And everyone who was in love once will perfectly understand what Steve is feeling now.
Insert random no homo usual quote a bro would say to his bro, when they were apart for so long. Because that is what Steve answers here.
Awkward 2
Let's strike another awkward moment... Okay, not so awkward because this is what happens when these two are flirting in their own world...
When flirting with your crush by phone in a one to one call is okay, and funny, and even Steve felt amused... Smiles giggling... Oh yes is perfect bc is the two of them...
Gif credit @mcdannowave
But... This...
Gif set credit @wildandwild
Okay, Steve is on the speaker, so everyone is hearing, and Danno first of all calls him babe, but is okay because he use to use that word very often... But then... He engaged with the "six", second meaning, and why is he talking like that? Is a sexual reference, to Steve's male reproductive organs hahahahaaha, and Kono's face in the second gif, even Chin looks at him like 'Did you just asked Steve to take care of his balls/penis?'
Did you just flirt in front of our salade?
And Steve would react differently for sure if they weren't on speaker, because the writers showed us how Steve reacted to a sexual joke, right?
But is different when the ohana is present... So it seems like Danny is aware of his big mouth, and he just went 'F...ck!'
So Steve is in no homo mode, because ohana is there. And Danny is just asking for the end of the world to come right in that moment.
Awkward 3
The reunion. I rewatched three more times the reunion. And is full of body language to read.
But, again, remember the concept of supportive ohana.
I couldn't find the clip of the scene, but I will say go rewatch and come. First, Steve's watching Danny approaching him...
His face is priceless, he can't speak, and he doesn't know what to say, and mostly, because Wu Fat is there with them. But he is like looking at him after two weeks. That face is screaming 'I missed you so much, did you miss me?'
You know when people says that distance is good because it makes you realize how much you miss the person you love? This is the same here.
But then, Steve just says BOOK HIM DANNO. And Danny is, feeling is an awkward moment too, but he goes with the easy joke, to brake the ice. Not hug here, even if they want to. And Danny wants to say a lot of things too... A lot of things he has in his tongue...
Then Kono comes, and for her is easy to say YOU DIDN'T CALL, NOT MESSAGES. WE MISS YOU. And the hug comes easy and natural.
Then Chin, another natural hug.
And Danny turns around in that moment from the police car to watch them. And is a longing stare. He wants a hug too, he wants to know what happened.
And Steve jokes with Chin : Did you think about me? So natural, because is Chin.
So, Kono says the things Danny wanted to say, but he didn't, because the relationship is different.
And Steve asked Chin the question he wanted to make Danny, because the relationship is not the same.
Gif set credit @articfoxxx
When Danny comes back, he has that stare again, a mix between relief, and sadness, and longing, and so many unanswered questions. But mostly, relief, to see him alive. Because he thought maybe he lost him when the CIA guy said it. He was thinking he wouldn't see Steve again, and the remembrance of that pain is still running through his veins... That's why that face...
And Steve is able to hug him, because the supportive ohana is there, and Wu Fat is not.
Steve is able to act normal, because the ohana is surrounding him, so, he goes and really just for a second time his Danno. Is not awkward if we make it natural when the supportive ohana is there.
I would love to know how this reunion would've go if there were just Steve and Danny... Hehe.
Awkward silence.
Sexual tension.
Loving the rewatch of the firsts seasons.
See you soon!

It is just me or Steve "I don't afraid of anything/anyone" McGarrett is afraid to call to Danny, after he left him only a letter and didn't give a sign of life for a long time.
(Yes he already knew that this conversation with his boyfriend will not be so easy!)

As per my previous post (god it's awful, it sounds like one of those work emails), I have strong suspicions that Steve indeed understood Danny's hurt, his feelings of betrayal, and his jilted lover attitude after he came back. After all, Steve himself felt the same when Danny blindsided him with the Rachel affair. But Danny didn't leave. Danny chose Steve, not Rachel. So Danny, who's big on words and loudly-spoken feelings (at least for Steve), chose to act and show where his heart stood instead of talking...and that's why Steve for once chose to use words, even if in his crooked way.
Danny wasn't so much hurt by Steve leaving, as he was by Steve deciding without consulting him first, discussing this thing, maybe allowing Danny to go with Steve and have his back. Which was exactly why Steve left without talking. Danny probably was living again the worst moments of his marriage, with sticky notes and then plain silence instead of healthy communication, with him taking detective job instead of, dunno, a safe and better paid job as a college professor, like Rachel probably wanted? How many times had Rachel been in Danny's place, and how many times Danny had behaved just like Steve? His damn words, that There is no "my own" in a friendship. There is no "my own." Your problems become my problems sound so much like the kind of accusations he threw at Rachel, or Rachel threw at him....just saying....
I guess Steve had some inkling about Danny’s possible cold shoulder when coming back, because he did the same by fucking up his career and breaking into the Governor’s house.
Him calling Danny the second time, though? Dude, that's just a vacation trip, basically. And he's going with Joe, who Danny trusted enough to keep Steve out of troubles to call him in after his imprisonment. He couldn’t risk another fuck up, and he knew by now Danny wasn't likely to try and dissuade him, even if probably he bitched about it. And anyway, he brought Danny to a second, very secluded, very private, second date in the open sea, with only the sky and the seagulls and the sharks as witnesses....poor Steve, he did try to make up for his fuckery, he so much wanted to offer some good make-up sex 😂
remember when Steve left Danny an actual hand-written letter like a soldier shipping off to war who couldn't say goodbye to his secret sweetheart in person?
and Danny called said letter 'dear Danny' – a play on 'dear John' i.e. a letter you send to break up with your military bf, - therefore essentially comparing them to wartorn lovers???
and while Steve was away everyone tiptoed around Danny and threw him sympathetic looks like he'd just lost a spouse?
and after Steve came back none-the-wiser Danny acted like a jilted lover who got broken up with in a text and gave Steve the cold shoulder
(which in his case was just being quiet but Steve can't stand Danny being quiet and not sharing his thoughts and feelings with him)
and that, in turn, made Steve understand how he had made Danny feel left out in the cold by refusing to include him in something so important
— so he course corrected because the prospect of Danny never speaking to him again was unbearable and and ...
these two basically had the shortest divorce arc in history because they really can't stand to be apart. break up to vow renewal speedrun in 3 episodes.

Top Five (cause I’m a rebel) (and these are in no particular order)
1. Don Flack in CSI:NY 2x24 Charge of this Post
Everything @reivenesque said. The whump was magnificent. Eddie’s performance was gut-wrenching. And the hospital scene with Mac standing beside his bed, holding his hand, and begging him to give some sort of sign that he’s going to be ok is some of the best small screen angst I’ve ever seen.
2 Dean Winchester SPN 4x16 On the Head of a Pin
I loved this ep so much I giffed it over @random-fandom-whump and then wrote up a whole piece on why I love it so much. I’ll link to it later when I’m not on Muck... I mean Mobile.
3. Steve in H50 6x25 O Ke Ali’i Wale No Ka’u Makemake
He’s weak, he’s grey, he tells Danny he thinks he’s going to die, he slips into unconsciousness, he bleeds out, Danny freaks out, he goes on a revenge mission, there’s organ donation. I could go on forever. And when they pull him from the plane? When Danny watched the paramedics work with his hand covering his own broken ribs and they show all that BLOOD!!! I can’t handle this episode at times.
4. Deeks in NCIS:LA 2x17 Personal
Deeks has gotten whumped like 3 times in the entire series and he’s my favorite so when whump happens to him, I tend to obsess over it. And obsess over this ep I did.
5. Tony in NCIS 2x22 SWAK
I still read fanfic about this ep. The aftermath is especially lovely. As well as fics about the inevitable consequences of scarred lungs.
6. Starsky in Starsky & Hutch 4x22 Sweet Revenge
So I know that’s six, but whatever. This episode, while entirely medically inaccurate (mostly), spawned so many unique and beautiful fics that I still find new ones even to this day. I literally spent years in the dwindling post-Sweet Revenge fic fandom, only to have many of my favorite stories disappear as the fandom slowly died off and archives were shut down. Still, it will always be my whump. The moment and the fandom I always and will always go back to no matter how forgotten it becomes.
Girl, I discovered the CSI franchise and though the whump there is sparse, it's some quality entertainment. George Eads and that famous "buried alive" two-parter on CSI, directed Quentin Tarantino. And Adam Rodriguez on CSI: Miami! First, his character gets shot in the head in S5, causing him some brain damage, then in S8, he gets smashed in the head again and ends up in a coma. And then CSI: NY and Eddie Cahill's Detective Flack, getting caught in an explosion... nice!
Girl. Girl. GIRL. I think I watched the buried alive episode only once because I’m honestly terrified of that trope in any show pretty much. I HATE CSI Miami and Adam Rodrigues will always be the annoying dude who got between Isabelle and Kyle in Roswell (who I also hated) but fuck the scene with him in the hospital with whatshisname ticked all my fucking hurt comfort boxes I felt like a disgrace to my own damn self. Girl. Girl. GIRL I LOVE Don Flack you have no idea. I legit bought the first two seasons of CSI NY because of the explosion episode because it was literally perfect. Mac (lol) being concerned about him and trying to keep him alive and the scene with them at the hospital in the end was legit perfect. I wish we’d get something like that for our OTHER Mac one day as well.Okay question: if you could pick 1 - okay, top three (or however many you want) of your most favourite whump scene from whatever episode of whatever show, what would it be?
Anyone else feel free to add yours too :D
